Jacob Bethell will become the youngest England men's captain in an international match, leading an under-strength team against Ireland in a three-match T20I series.
The 21-year-old will take the helm in the first match at Malahide on Wednesday, with regular captain Harry Brook and other key players rested.
Bethell's previous captaincy experience includes leading England Under-19s and Warwickshire's second XI, but this will be his first at the senior international level. He expressed a relaxed approach, aiming to let his team's talent shine.
He will surpass a record set in 1889 by Monty Bowden, who captained England at age 23 years and 144 days. Bethell acknowledged the record was unexpected but considered it a "cool stat."
Bethell's appointment comes just over a year after his England debut against Australia. He is proud of his progress and grateful for the opportunity, viewing it as a testament to his character as well as cricketing ability.
While focused on the Ireland series, Bethell also addressed speculation about his potential inclusion in England's Ashes tour squad, stating that his focus is solely on the current matches and that no decisions have yet been made regarding the Ashes squad.
Changes to the England squad for the Ireland series include Jordan Cox replacing Brook in the middle order, and either Sonny Baker or Scott Currie filling in for Jofra Archer in the bowling attack.
