Jason Gallian became chairman on an interim basis after predecessor Anu Mohindru resigned. Essex chairman Jason Gallian has announced he will step down from the role after "careful consideration".

Gallian had assumed the role on an interim basis last year after predecessor Anu Mohindru resigned when he was found to have lied about studying at the University of Oxford. Gallian will remain on the county's board, with the club to appoint a new chairman at its next board meeting.

In an open letter on the club's website, Gallian said: "This has not been an easy decision but I believe it is the right one for the club." Gallian's decision to step down from the role was made at Essex's AGM on Monday. The meeting also saw Jamas Hodivala KC and Daren Mootoo appointed to the board.

"My greatest strength, passion and commitment has always been cricket itself," said Gallian, who finished his playing career at Essex. "I believe I can make the greatest contribution by focusing my time and energy on supporting our cricket programme and most importantly, the welfare and development of our players."

BBC Essex sports editor Victoria Polley: Gallian took on the role in an interim capacity in September last year. That was after former chair, Anu Mohindru resigned - having been found to have lied on his CV. Gallian - who represented Essex as a player - will remain on the club's board and in a letter to members, says he believes his greatest strength is contributing to the cricket programme.

Essex County Cricket Club is now looking for a fifth chair in as many years.
