Lewis Gregory, captain of Somerset, has amassed 14 wickets this season, including impressive five-wicket hauls in both matches he has played in the Rothesay County Championship, Division One.
At the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton on day one, Yorkshire scored 162, with Bean contributing 35, Bairstow 34, and Root 33. Gregory achieved figures of 6-43 and Overton took 2-42.
Somerset replied with 201-3, including Thomas who scored a remarkable 136* and Abell who was 41* not out. Somerset (3 pts) now leads Yorkshire (1 pt) by 39 runs.
Gregory claimed six wickets while rookie opener Josh Thomas scored a superb maiden century, showcasing Somerset's dominance on the opening day of the County Championship Division One match against Yorkshire.
After losing the toss, Yorkshire started strong at 124-3 under overcast skies, but faltered dramatically, losing their last seven wickets for just 38 runs, with Gregory taking five in a brilliant 16 overs.
Root made 33 and Bairstow 34, while Bean added 35, leading to a total of 162.
In response, Somerset struggled early at 35-3, but 21-year-old Thomas spearheaded a recovery with 136 not out off 150 balls, ending the day with Somerset at 201-3 and Abell on 41.
18-year-old Thomas Rew, captain of the England Under-19 team, made his Championship debut, joining his brother James in the team.
With a pitch providing pace and movement for the seamers, Yorkshire had already lost Adam Lyth, lbw to left-arm seamer Alfie Ogborne. The floodlights were switched on at 11:20 BST as James Wharton, after spending 19 balls on nought, edged Gregory to wicketkeeper James Rew. This made the score 48-2.
Bean nicked a catch to Rew in Migael Pretorius' second over, resulting in 64-3. Root and Bairstow demonstrated their batting prowess with a 50-run partnership in just 42 balls.
Root blossomed after a slow start, hitting three successive driven fours in one over. Bairstow started aggressively but had a lucky break when Overton dropped a slip chance off Pretorius on the final delivery before lunch, which was taken at 115-3.
In the afternoon session, Gregory broke through by bowling Root off an inside edge. Bairstow soon followed, falling to Overton after edging to Rew, with the score at 140-5.
Gregory then struck three times in the 37th over, claiming Matthew Revis and former Somerset teammate Dom Bess, before having Logan van Beek caught at third slip.
The inspired Somerset captain had George Hill dropped on one, only to bowl Jhye Richardson aiming an airy drive moments later. Overton concluded Yorkshire's innings by catching Hill for 18 from a top-edged pull.
Somerset began their reply poorly, with Archie Vaughan falling for seven and Tom Lammonby trapped lbw for five. When James Rew was caught by Bean at third slip for seven, the hosts found themselves in trouble.
However, Thomas counter-attacked with a remarkable selection of shots just before tea, leading to a score of 63-3 at the break.
The left-hander thrived post-tea, reaching his half-century off 54 balls with nine boundaries. A six off Revis saw Thomas pass his previous best Championship score of 86.
A boundary off the same bowler brought up a memorable hundred, achieved off just 109 balls, including 14 fours. Abell provided calm support at the other end as the duo built a century partnership off 149 deliveries.
They also pushed Somerset into the lead with Abell hitting a six over long-on off Bess. At stumps, the partnership amassing 166 runs remained vital.
