Sheffield Wednesday Faces Winding-Up Petition

Sheffield Wednesday is reportedly on the brink of receiving a winding-up petition due to outstanding payments to HMRC, according to BBC Radio Sheffield. An investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Sheffield Star, suggests that the Championship club has a debt of £1m.

The winding-up petition intensifies the pressure on the club's owner, Dejphon Chansiri, to consider a sale. The club is already contending with six separate EFL embargoes after repeated delays in wage payments over the past seven months.

Wednesday currently sits second from the bottom in the Championship standings, with six points from nine games, following a challenging period off the field that has resulted in a depleted squad. The gravity of the situation became evident when May's wages were not paid on time, mirroring a similar occurrence in March.

Amidst the ongoing uncertainty and various registration embargoes imposed on the club, highly-rated manager Danny Rohl left in July, and his assistant Henrik Pedersen assumed control just 10 days before the season's commencement.

The team did not play any pre-season friendly matches in front of fans, and players withdrew from a training match against Burnley due to unpaid wages in July. Fans have staged protests before and during games this season and boycotted the home EFL Cup ties with Leeds and Grimsby, while the supporters' trust also encouraged fans not to buy drinks or snacks in the stadium.

Thai businessman Chansiri, who has been the club's owner for the past 10 years, has been absent throughout this period, and a sale has not yet materialized.
