USA Dominates Netherlands While UAE Keeps Super 8 Aspirations Alive

USA 196-6 (20 overs): Mukkamalla 79 (51), Ranjane 48* (24); De Leede 3-37

Netherlands 103 all (15.5 overs): De Leede 23 (17); Singh 4-21

The United States thrashed the Netherlands by 93 runs to give themselves an outside chance of reaching the T20 World Cup Super 8s - and leave their opponents on the brink of elimination.

Having lost their first two games of the tournament to India and Pakistan, the USA responded with an emphatic victory at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium.

Saiteja Mukkamalla's impressive knock of 79 from 51 balls, and Shubham Ranjane's unbeaten 48 off 24, set a target of 197 for the Netherlands, who failed to make any real dent in the run-chase.

If they are to progress further, the USA must beat Namibia in their final Group A match on Sunday - boosting their run-rate in the process - and hope other results go their way.

Harmeet Singh has now taken seven wickets in three matches at the tournament.

Nevertheless, this was a confidence-boosting victory for the Americans, who made a bold decision to drop all-time wicket-taker Saurabh Netravalkar in one of three changes.

Their innings was shaped by brave hitting from the start, despite openers Shayan Jahangir being bowled for 20 off 14 and Monank Patel being caught for 36 off 22 in the second and ninth overs.

The USA continued their assault, going on to post 31 runs in the powerplay to reach 96-2 after 10 overs.

Mukkamalla briefly looked like he might become the first player from an associate nation to make a T20 World Cup century - having reached 50 off 30 balls - only to be caught by Colin Ackermann at deep square off Bas de Leede's bowling.

His superb knock featured four sixes and five fours and provided the platform for a tally that proved too much for the Dutch.

In reply, they needed to execute their highest chase at a T20 World Cup - and second-highest overall in the format - to secure victory.

And they never got going as USA seam bowler Harmeet Singh claimed a fine 4-21.

Captain Scott Edwards and de Leede offered a little resistance as the only batters to pass 20, but the Netherlands were bowled out for 103 with 4.1 overs unused.

They next face co-hosts India on Wednesday in their final match but, with their run rate (-1.352) inferior to the USA's (+0.533) and Pakistan (+0.932), only a freakish set of results will see them progress to the next phase.

Men's T20 World Cup, Group D, Delhi

Canada 150-7 (20 overs): Thaker 50 (41); Siddique 5-35

UAE 154 (19.4 overs): Sharma 74* (53), Khan 51 (29); Bin Zafar 3-14

United Arab Emirates won by five wickets.

Aryansh Sharma hit an unbeaten 74 as United Arab Emirates bolstered their own remote hopes of qualifying for the Super 8s with a tense five-wicket win over Canada.

Defending their total of 150-7, Canada looked well placed with four overs remaining, only for Sohaib Khan to reignite UAE's chase when he took 17 off Dillon Heyliger.

UAE needed eight runs off the final over and Sharma settled any nerves when he clobbered Jaskarandeep Singh's first ball for six over mid-wicket.

Khan was then caught - after a blistering 51 off 29 balls, including four sixes - with the scores level.

But new batter Muhammad Arfan nonchalantly hit Singh for four to seal the victory with two balls to spare as Sharma top-scored with his knock coming off 53 balls.

UAE are now third in Group D on two points but the associate nation must pull off shock wins over full members South Africa and Afghanistan next week to reach the next phase.

They have never beaten a full member at a World Cup of any format but will take some confidence from the manner in which they chased down this total.

Earlier, Junaid Siddique had picked up the best figures by a UAE player at a T20 World Cup with 5-35 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Harsh Thaker, who struck three sixes and two fours in a 41-ball half-century, had provided the backbone of Canada's total.

He shared a 58-run partnership with Navneet Dhaliwal to help the Canadians recover from 38-3 before the latter was run out on 34.

Thaker fell victim to Siddique's slower ball with 14 balls left and Canada struggled to find the boundary against some tight bowling by the UAE.

Shreyas Movva made a typically useful run-a-ball 21 before Siddique took two wickets in the final over to collect his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 internationals.
