Luke Wells Extends His Stay at Lancashire Until 2028

Injured top-order batter Luke Wells has signed a new contract with Lancashire until 2028. Wells joined Lancashire in 2021 after a decade with Sussex.

Lancashire agreed terms with Wells over the winter before the 35-year-old dislocated his shoulder last month against Gloucestershire. The left-hander, who is also a handy leg-spin bowler, needed surgery on his shoulder, and Lancashire have not put a date on his recovery.

Wells signed a three-year deal before the 2024 season, and Lancashire director of cricket Mark Chilton stated it was a no-brainer to tie him down to the Emirates Old Trafford until the end of the 2028 campaign.

Chilton told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Not everyone was aware, but a deal had been agreed during the winter to commit to Luke to the end of 2028. Ultimately, it wasn't that difficult a decision with Luke if I'm honest with you. He definitely wanted to commit to a longer-term deal or a medium-term deal, and we were happy to commit to that as well."

Wells spent a decade with his home county Sussex before joining Lancashire in 2021, and Chilton says he is an excellent voice in the dressing room.

"We're about developing players, but Luke has proved across all formats what value he can bring to the team," Chilton said. "He's also a very good person to have in a changing room. He's got strong views, but he's a real team man. Sometimes changing rooms need a little bit of disturbance, or however you want to call it. He brings a very healthy challenge to a changing room because he's very team orientated."
