Wolves Eye Middlesbrough's Edwards for Managerial Role

Wolves are reportedly preparing to formally approach Middlesbrough to appoint Rob Edwards as their new head coach. According to BBC Sport's report on Sunday, Edwards, the former Luton manager, is a top contender to succeed Vitor Pereira, who was dismissed after a winless start to the Premier League season.

Wolves previously engaged in discussions with former boss Gary O'Neil, but the 42-year-old withdrew from consideration on Monday. Edwards, also 42 and a former Wolves player, has consistently been a strong candidate for the Molineux position and is now emerging as the club's leading choice.

Sources indicate that the relegation-threatened club is preparing an official approach to Middlesbrough, who currently hold third place in the Championship. Wolves find themselves at the bottom of the table with a mere two points after 10 games, trailing 17th-placed Burnley by eight points.

It is understood that Wolves would need to provide substantial compensation to Middlesbrough to secure Edwards, who assumed his role at the Riverside Stadium in June. Edwards made over 100 appearances for Wolves between 2004 and 2008, later serving as a coach and briefly as interim manager in 2016 following Walter Zenga's dismissal.

He took on the head coach position at Forest Green Rovers in 2021 before joining Championship side Watford the following year, but was sacked only 11 matches into his tenure. The former Wales centre-back succeeded Nathan Jones as Luton boss in November 2022 and guided the club to the Premier League for the first time in their history during his first season.

Luton were relegated from the top flight the following year, and Edwards departed during the 2024-25 season, with the Hatters subsequently being relegated to the third tier. Middlesbrough appointed Edwards on a three-year deal after the sacking of Michael Carrick.
